The problem
Tiding Health is a funded healthcare startup selling wellness and health benefits to employers — and its founder isn’t an engineer. The vision and the customers were there; the platform wasn’t. Tiding needed someone who could be the entire technical side of the company: turn business goals into an architecture, build it, ship it, and coordinate every vendor along the way — without a team around them.
Engagement and role
I joined as Tiding’s solo technical partner — Senior Architect and PM, sole engineer — working directly with the CEO from July through December 2025. That meant owning the full translation chain: the CEO’s business goals in one direction, a production B2B platform out the other, with no layer of management or hand-off in between.
Constraints
- Sole engineer: architecture, build, deployment, and project management on one pair of hands.
- A non-technical founder — requirements arrived as business outcomes, and turning them into specs was part of the job, not a given.
- The platform had to line up with external vendors’ systems and timelines — Paylocity, Galileo, and ClaimChoice — none of which were mine to control.
What shipped
- A custom end-to-end platform. Azure infrastructure, a C# backend built from scratch, and a React front end — the B2B implementation employers and their members use.
- Vendor integration groundwork. Requirements gathered, reconciled, and coordinated across Paylocity, Galileo, and ClaimChoice, so the platform fit the systems Tiding’s business actually runs on.
- Product management, not just code. Working directly with the CEO, I ran the roadmap end to end — scoping, sequencing, and shipping without a PM layer above me.
- How it shipped solo: AI-assisted delivery is how one engineer holds team-level pace — agents draft, I architect and review. The product itself makes no AI claims, because it doesn’t need any.
